Je me souviens encore de ces milliers de boutons de différentes formes, de différentes couleurs qui envahissaient son atelier à New York, lors de notre première rencontre il y a quatre ans.
Les boutons! Mais pas n'importe quels boutons car ceux-ci sont précieux et feront partie des futures oeuvres de l'artiste.
Ran Hwang utilise le vocabulaire et les matériaux de la mode afin d’habiller ses panneaux de bois ou de Plexiglass. Fils, épingles, perles, aiguilles, boutons de Cristal ou de papier, de ces minuscules éléments, l’artiste coréenne crée d’imposantes pièces, à la poésie et à la spiritualité fulgurante.
«Je crée de grandes icônes telles qu’ un Buddha ou un vase traditionel, en utilisant des matériaux issus de l’industrie de la Mode. Le processus de construction de ces larges installations prend du temps, est répétitif et requiert un effort manuel se rapprochant d’une forme d’auto-meditation. Je martèle des milliers d’épingles dans un mur tel un moine, qui, faisant face au mur pratique le Zen. Mon travail est divisé en deux groupes. Dans le premier, les épingles sont utilisées pour tenir les boutons tout en restant mobiles, suggérant ainsi la propension d’indécision de la génétique humaine. Je fais le choix d’utiliser des boutons qui sont aussi communs et ordinaires que les êtres humains. Dans le second groupe, un nombre considérable d’épingles connectent des mètres de fil créant un espace négatif des images présentées, des fils suggérent des connections entre être humains ainsi qu’un réseau de communication entre des expériences humaines d’apparence sans relations les unes avec les autres. L’espace négatif rempli par l’absence d’image positive suggère une idée de mortalité au coeur de la reconnaissance de soi»
Ran Hwang trouve de la beauté dans les matériaux les plus ordinaires de la couture comme les perles, aiguilles, boutons de cristal ou de papiers.
D'une rare dextérité et avec un souci du détail, l'artiste crée ses installations avec un mouvement et une perspective donnant une vie intérieure à ses oeuvres. L'oiseau ainsi réalisé prend son vol en déployant ses ailes majestueuses.

Chaque bouton peut se déplacer librement entre la tête de la broche et le plexiglass lui servant de support.
Là, un phénix se repliant sur lui même nous apporte cette méditation sur la fragilité de la vie et sur la nature cyclique du temps.
Au fur et à mesure de ses expositions, Ran Hwang nous étonne à chacune de ses installations, symbole de grâce et de liberté.
